telnet to streaming tcp port

Hi,
I am trying to view data streaming from a tcp port on a dedicated server. In Windoze I can use telnet with the IP address and the port and just see the data from the port stream out into the terminal.

With telnet for Linux, telnet seems to want me to login to the system as if it was a remote system. I know I can use the telnet command with an address and port but I run into problems after a few moments.

It seems as though the character set changes to hieroglyphics or at least ascii drawing characters. After a while it can change back to regular characters or not. If reqular characters are showing, I can exit normally. Otherwise I have to exit blindly using ^Z and then use the reset command to restore the terminal character set.

I need to automate this so Linux newbies can see this data for a moment and then reliably exit without leaving telnet running.

Any ideas? I thought about a script to redirect the telnet data to file and then running kill to stop telnet but I can't seem to redirect the stdoutput from telnet.

I am truly stumped,

Thanks,

Chris Pine
