Telnet server?
 

Okay heres the issue. In my Linux class the teacher will allow me to do my homework on the computer at home, if he can reach it VIA telnet. (granted telnet is insecure, but ill only have it running when im at school).
Now ive spent some time on the How TO pages and i cant seem to drag up anything on how to access the computer remotely through telnet. I know its possible, but im not sure how.
Im at a loss guys, any help would be much appreciated?

giving us specifics on your distro your using and what type of connection your using will help us out? or do what acid said if your the one accessing the box that has telnet already setup.

Most recent distros install firewalls that block off most ports. If you are trying to connect but get an error message like "Connection refused" this might be the case. Telnet might also be denied with TCPWrappers. What distro you're using will help us in pointing you in the right direction. Another possibiltiy would be that telnet is blocked by a firewall that your school's network administrator setup.

BTW, Why wont SSH work. The is a free client called Putty which will allow a Windows machine to connect to a machine running an SSH server. I would strongly recomend that you talk to your teacher and try to get him/her to use SSH instead. If your school uses hubs instead of switches anybody wont have much problem getting you telnet password or watching your telnet session.

I appoligize, after rereading what i said i wasnt very clear.
What i wanted to do was setup a telnet server at home on my Red Hat 7.2 system. Just so i could log in from school to show him that I was doing the homework on my home Red Hat computer.
I was originaly looking for the Telnet server install RPM, although i did find it on the Red Hat cd1, installed it and its running fine.

i'd recommend using SSH instead if you come back to this thread by any chance.

also make sure that either of the ports 22 or port 23
telnet and/or ssh arent blocked by school.
most of the schools block both these ports and only have port 80 open...
be aware of that..
just do a nmap <IP of your schools' server IP> and check it
