telnet problems
New to Linux..........I can ping a Linux server but cannot telnet to it. Settings in /etc/inetd.d/telnet seem OK and telnet is enabled. I can telnet to the server from itself fine which indicates 'telnet' is running. I just can't connect to it from another machine.
Running Red Hat 7.1 and trying to connect from a Win NT 4.0 machine. Any help would be great!:smash:

i take it you've not bothered to search this forum at all?
change the line in /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
for
disable = yes
to
disable = no

oh sorry that is a bit rude isn't it? :-S
can you connect via other services such as ssh? i would guess that if you can connect locally.. as i would have seen if i read the q properly... then it's a firewall thing i'd guess.

Well he said he can connect to it from the server itself, so I doubt it's disabled. It's probably the default firewall rules of redhat which are blocking telnet access. Try changing your firewall rules.
But anyways I'm sure a search on this forum would bring up lots of results and maybe give you the solution.

You can drop any firewal rules by doing the following
ipchains -F
or
iptables -F
Many new distros are coming with built in firewalls, RH7.1 is definately one of these distros.
