Telnet Problem AGAIN AARRRRRR....
I have posted a msg similar to this in the past. I am running RedHat6.1 and run telnet (and soon to be replaced by SSH...).
Once the Linux box is telnet'd to I send the login across to a WindowsNT box. This has worked fine for 2yrs !!!
The telneting in to Linux works fine - but when this command - "Telnet 192.123.3.23" is executed it gives the msg "Telnet: tcp/telnet unknown service"
I have tried re-installing RD6.1 on a few occasions and after a fresh install, all the telnetting works fine, but all the sudden it returns the above msg.
I have now answers yet....
help help help...AARRRHHHHH...
This problem is reminding me of, dare me say it,
WWIINNDDOOWWSSS........

Also I have checked the following :
/etc/services has telnet uncommented
/etc/inetd.conf has telnet uncommented
When I run netstat -na is shows the telnet service as LISTEN

1) check for inet package ---> # rpm -qa | grep -i inet
if you could find the package --> inetd-0.16-4
its fine
(else)
install the package # rpm -ivh inetd-0.16-4
2)check for telnet package ---> #rpm -qa | grep -i telnet
if you could find the package --> telnet-0.16-6 and telnet-server-0.16-6 its fine
(else)
you should install both or whichever is missing
#rpm -ivh telnet-0.16-6

I found the problem - It's quite a simple solution.
When I was undergoing all my security settings, I made the file /etc/services only readable and accessible by root !! I changed this back ie "root# chmod 666 /etc/services" and I can now sleep at night !!!
