Telnet issues, please help
Ok, I think I've read about every thread that regards Telnet and I'm still coming up empty. I've tried many different, informative things and still no luck (although I did learn a lot!!!). PS - I'm running Linux 7.1. I chose DNS server during install and installed Telnet during this process. GNORPM sees it installed and doesn't report any errors (not sure how reliable that is).
Here's my issue: I'm getting the connection refused error.
Here's what I've tried:
1. I can't telnet localhost, let alone from another machine. I get the same connection refused error???
2. I disabled the Firewall so that it wouldn't block any of the ports.
3. I edited the telnet file located at /etc/xinetd.d so that it said disabled = no.
4. I tried ipchains --flush
5. I tried chkconfig telnet on
6. I tried netstat -l | grep telnet and didn't get any response so I assume that means telnets isn't listening. So I tried to start the service. Still nothing.
I did a fresh install so I assume there wasn't anything in the hosts.allow & hosts.deny files. I'm not at work now so I can't check the machine until tomorrow.
I know I can't telnet as root, but I didn' t even get that far. So I uninstalled telnetd (thinking there was a problem with the daemon) and when I went to reinstall via GNORPM, nothing happened. When I selected install and chose the right package, I expected to see a progress indicator as the package installed, but I got nothing! Is there another way to try reinstalling the package?
Any ideas? There's nothing on the box at the moment so I'll do a reinstall if everyone thinks that's the best method. Just looking for ideas at this point!!
Thanks for any and all help...

look in /etc/xinetd.d , there should be a file called telnetd or something similar, open that file up you should see at the bottom disabled = yes, change the yes to a no, and reboot. telnet should work now. Red hat 7.2 disables some services by default, its up to the admin to enable. I personally use ssh.

Ok...you need to cd /etc/xinitd.d... in there you should find a file named telnet vi it there should be a line that says disabled=yes change that to no and restart xinetd..
You really should be using ssh...telnet is insecure
