Telnet How-To?
Does anyone know where I can find a Telnet how-to? I am having trouble setting up Telnet services on my RedHat 7.1 box. I have a static IP with the Firewall set at the default installation settings. I can't get the telnet service to start no matter what I do. I have edited ../etc/xinetd.d/telnet to enable it but that didn't help. I have some experience with Linux but this is new to me. Please help me somebody!

You can go to the Linux Documentation Project Homepage for the How-to, but before you do that, did you turn off the firewall that comes with RedHat 7.1 by default? As root run "setup" and you'll get a menu, the second choice is "firewall configuration", follow that link and tell it "no firewall" so that it disables the firewall that came with it.

Thanks!
That seemed to work but now no firewall. Is the firewall configurable enough to allow incoming telnet and ftp or should I use another firewall application?
Thanks again,

It's configurable enough to allow certain services. If you go into "setup" again and go into "firewall configuration" and then go to "customize" you can mark which services to allow and which devices to trust. But I suggest recompiling your kernel to use IPtables. If you need a tutorial for it you can go here .

Thanks again. I am going to give your suggestion about the IP Tables a try.
