Telnet doesnt allow login ???

Hello Friends,
I configured the telnet server service to start at boot using the 'ntsysv' command in RH 8.0.When i try to connect to it thru winXP,it shows the login prompt alright. But I cannot login using any username or even root. The passwords are surely correct. What may be the problem ?Do i have to change any config files to allow a certain user to login ?Also are the usernames same as that present on the linux system or they are different ?

Any good link will be really helpful.

TIA.Good Day.

Welcome to the forum,

I don't know the solution, but can I suggest something to try.

Can you telnet from the Red Hat box to itself OK? If not, the problem is on the server side. If so, the problem may be on the WinXP side. Also, it might help to look in a log file (/var/log/messages?) to see if the telnet daemon is giving some clue as to why the session is being rejected.

Welcome to LQ.

I would stronly advise disabling telnet and installing SSH:
http://www.openssh.org

It is much more secure.
