using a LAN? what does that mean? how do you suppose you're meant to use a network application without a local network being involved at some point?

What distribution of linux are you running?

You are successful using telnet on the server but not using other computers on the same local network.

You are trying to use telnet to connect to a server that is outside of the local network?

Can you explain your hardware configuration?

Where is the client located?

Where is the server located?

ok here is the full explanation

my computer is P-3 using win xp. i have a small local area connection (only 2 computers). my computer is not the server.
i want to connect to a computer in my university, which is using linux.
i tried to connect to the university computer though my computer, i used telnet. i wrote 'telnet gw.cs.huji.......' but this didn't work it gave me the message: "Connecting to gw.cs...... could not open connection to the host, on port 23: connect faild".
when i tried to connect to the university computer through the server of my local area connection it worked.
so there must be a problem with using telnet through a lan.
there must be a way to fix this problem. if anyone knows please let me know.
if this isn't enough information tell me what else do i need to tell you.

by the way when i use a the internet on my computer i need to specify my proxy settings, the address of the proxy. do i need to do the same for telnet. if so how?

any sysadmin who would admit telnet connections from the internet should be fired on the spot !
