Red face telnet


hello there
i am not able to telnet from my one pc(win me) to
another(red hat)
it shows connection failed to 200.200.200.2(red hat ip)
but i am able to ping

That's probably because telnet isn't on your machine.

1) install the rpms from your installation cd's. I think it should be telnetd-0.17 or something similar.

2) Turn it on in xinetd. in /etc/xinetd.d there *should* be a telnet config file, just change disabled to no.

check these

verify telnet daemon is running (and on port 23).
- `ps aux | grep telnet`
- `netstat -pn | grep "\:23"`
verify you are not trying to log in as root.
verify that /etc/hosts.deny is empty _or_ does not have the window box's ip address listed.
verify there are no iptable/ipchain ruleset denying your win me box.

Check that the TELNET service is enable in the following file:
/etc/services
