sysfs p2p1/eth0 tx & rx zero

Hi,

Kernel: 3.8.5
nic: alx (linux-backports)

/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:02:00.0/net/eth0/statistics/rx_bytes
and everything else in this directory is zero

otherwise networking ok, just no statistics
Statitics ok in 3.5.3 kernel
iftop shows statistics ok

1. anyway to fix this?
2. if no fix maybe I can route traffic through virtual nic (vde2)

any help appreciated.
