Switching to ADSL from dialup with Fedora Core 1

Hello there, I have finally got round to sorting out ADSL. I've signed up but don't get activated for another week. I am currently using dialup via Network Device Control in Fedora Core 1 and having read about many USB problems I have bought an ADSL modem with 4 port router.

I have a dual boot Fedora/XP system and I'm thinking that the best thing to do would be to set up the modem/router in XP and get connected up and then sort out the connection in Linux. My question is, what do I need to do to set up connection to the internet from within Linux. I can access the router by activating eth0 from within Network Device Control, is there something else I need to do to let Fedora know I'm not using dialup anymore?

Thanks for your help

All you need to do :-

- Set up your modem/router with dhcp or static. They normally come with NAT set up and all you have to do is fill in your service provider settings like user/pass, nameserver1, nameserver2, dhcp range, ip address internal/external etc etc.

- Assign IP address(if static), subnet mask, gateway (your router) and nameservers to your linux box. You should be up and running then. happy browsing!

linuxxed, thanks for the info, since the service provider settings are on the modem/router can I set them from in XP (since the disk that came with the modem/router is for XP) and will the modem/router then remember them when I boot into Fedora?

I have been able to access another computer through the router already does that mean that my IP address, subnet mask and gateway are set properly? Then I'd only need to set the nameservers which are the DNS settings aren't they?

Looks good - all you need to do on the linux box is set up the router IP address as your default gateway and your ISP's DNS servers as the default DNS servers and it should work out of the box.
