Switch ethernet- to wireles - to ethernet?

Hello, I may or may not have acquired the Holy Grail of a working, wireless, encrypted connection with Kanotix, but I'm too afraid to find out.

1) I booted Kanotix with ethernet cable plugged in. Looked at advice all over the internet, then

2) set up some parameters with KWiFi Manager. In the KWM, I see a finite connection speed, and green bars, and green waves 'tween blue box and PC. I don't yet have a Local IP address. I unplugged the ethernet cable: no internet action.

3) In order to connect back to the internet on that PC and ask for more advice, I plugged the ethernet cable back in. No internet action.

Q: do I need to do something to linux to tell it, "hey go USE that wirless connection I just made for you," "Now go back and look for that original ethernet connection you originally had?" Is there some alphabet soup command here?

Eager to know because I may have mastered wireless, or I"m as hopelessly lost as ever. Also 'cuz I did it on a LIVE CD, I really need satisfication that I did it the correct way before rebooting.

thanks kindly. :D
