swat? why did this happen?
so I finally got SWAT going. wow, but why did it only work with my loopback addy? I though i should be able to put my local ip of 192.168.1.100, but it gave an error of something about a broken connection.? so as clever as i am? I try my loopback 127.0.0.1 and it worked....and i only tried that since i was able to access swat from outside my LAN.?
still unable to view shares from my windows machine, could this be part of the problem?
thanks,
CK

your loopback is set like it should be so lets leave that alone and work on why you are not able to view shares
can you ping the linux box from your Win p/c's if (NO) then possible cable problem if you are trying to connect the Win P/C directly to the Linux box then you need a crossover cable
if thats OK then setup your smb.conf
refer to thread(10707) ...subject SAMBA there are a couple good examples to start with

This config should work
Here is a smb.conf file that should work for any Windoze and Linux enviroment.
[global]
workgroup = <workgroup name>
netbios name = <netbios name>
server string = Linux Server
encrypt passwords = yes
os level = 1
preferred master = no
domain master = no
hosts allow = <network addresses> #ex: 192.168.0.
[temp]
comment = TMP Directory
path = /tmp
read only = no
browseable = yes
create mask = 0666
directory mask = 0777
Forget useing SWAT, it works better when you can write your own smb.conf files on your own, because it makes you look smarter, and writing the files aren't really that difficiult after a while.
Hope this helps

yeah, I see swat is not really valuable. it's just one of those things that irked me cuz I know it's there and I have to make it work. anyway, I've been using webmin and manual configuration combination and have since got my network up and stable.....I reloaded win98 on my laptop and I think that helpled too, since I was tampering with the registry before.
Thanks for the help all.

If you want a no-brainer web admin utility, try webmin. You can find it off of freshmeat.net. It's cool 'cause it allows you to configure more than just Samba.
