SUSE linux 9.1: only root user can resolv domain names
 

Hi,
I have this strange problem i'm connected to the internet via cable and i get my ip via dhcp. I filled in my nameservers in the resolv.conf file and set my proxy's in yast en konqueror as root user and now the root user can surf correctly. However when i login using another user i can only surf to an ip. I can't see why? is there a seperate resolv.conf file for each user?

As a normal user if you open up a shell and try pinging a name does that work? If it does then its a Konqueror settings issue.

Certainly any Konqueror settings are specific to users, so setting up a proxy in its settings would only be saved for that particular user.

Setting up a proxy in YaST would be global but according to the help screen it may not be used by the browser.

DNS resolving is global so normally there's only one resolv.conf.
However, you can have dhcp set up to dynamically modify resolv.conf in which case it will create a new temporary one and save the old one. In SuSE this is controlled by settings in the /etc/sysconfig/network/ directory in either the default configuration files (config and dhcp) or the interface file - ifcfg-eth0 in my case.

nope, pinging a name does not work when i'm in a user other than root. Unknown host error
Even when i su root it won't ping a name a long as i'm logged in as normal user via the graphical login.
it drives me crazy...
