SuSE Linux 8.1 (YaST2 Network Configuration)

Subject: Connecting to the internet via Network Card in SuSE Linux 8.1 (YaST2 Configuration Question).

I have a MS Windows XP Professional PC with an USB ADSL Broadband connection and the system has a network card. Using a single crossover network cable, I’ve connected the XP box to my SuSE 8.1 box in order to share the internet connection (it works on other Windows PC’s).

I have set-up the Microsoft Home Networking Wizard which sets the network card to an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0. If my understanding is correct, you are suppose to give the connecting PC a static IP address.

However, within the YaST2 Network/Basic and Network/Advanced configuration I have various things to set-up and I do not know what to do. The manuals aren’t helping me as the Konqueror web browser appears to be unable to search for anything.

I can ping the IP address of the XP PC so I know it’s working but I can’t access the internet.

I set-up the SuSE PC to learn Linux – but other than opening applications, I’m finding it a bit difficult.

Please help.

Assuming you've set up linux 192.168.0.x subnet 255.255.255.0

You have to add a gateway too

192.168.0.1

and your dns servers

192.168.0.1

if that don't work for dns add in your ISP dns servers
