I am having a peculiar problem. Everything was running well, but one fine day, i could not login as root using graphical login screen on my SUSE 9. It goes inside, but as soon as it logs in , the screen becomes completely black, and it returns back to login screen again. Moreover, on command line, i can login as root , but upon typing startx, it gives, some peculiar DCOP server errors, and fails to login. Only way to login, for me , is to login using graphical login screen, to "failsafe" mode, and type gnome, go to gnome and browse net as i am doing now.

Please help me out !!!

Do not use graphical root logins. They are bad & dangerous.

A) If a program (ex. browser) is exploited (eg. by visiting a bad site) a hacker has root access
B) If a program malfunctions, it could destroy your whole system.
C) If you screw up, you could destroy your whole system.

Use su (and preferably sudo) for root access.

i am having the same problem. I can not login as root after installing some software (i think is was yahoo messenger)
