Suse 9 Alcatel Speedtouch USB

hi all,

Has anybody used to connect to the net with suse 9 & speedtouch usb. I used to have it running on suse 8.1/8.2. Suse support provides null info & support. I tried others' drivers but never succeeded.

TIA

I have installed this myself, and SuSE is one of the easiest distros to use with this modem.

Here's how:

1. Download the microcode for the modem - you get this at:

http://download.ethomson.com/download/speedmgmt.tar.gz

2. Open up a shell.

3. Unzip the speedmgmt.tar.gz file - it will go into a directory called mgmt

4. Go into mgmt

5. Login as root.

6. Type make, then make install

7. Edit (I use emacs, because it doesn't split lines unlike pico) /etc/hotplug/usb.usermap. In the line starting 'speedtouch' you will find the hex number 0x0000. Add another 0x0000 after this, with at least one space in between.

8. Edit the file /etc/hotplug/usb/speedtouch . Where it says "modprobe -k speedtch", edit speedtch to say speedtouch

9. After you've exited the editor, type: rchotplug restart

10. Go into YaST2 (you need root for this too of course) and, under the network section you will find the trigger for the DSL configurer. Click it.

11. Enter your username and password (if you're in BT, remember the @hg*.btinternet.com bit in the username); in the VPI/VCI type 0.38, and specify PPP over ATM if it's a USB modem. It will guide you through all of this. After you finish it will start KInternet, which is what is responsible for running the Internet connection.

I hope this helps.

Couple of questions

Hi
I'm using Alcatel Spedtouch Home and a Davicom Ethernet controller to connect to the Internet. I have never been able to use yast to configure my modem successfully :( So my question's are these 1)should these instructions regarding the microcode also work for SuSE 9 professional? 2) How do you specify your own vpi/vci numbers manually as I live in Iceland and it is not an option in yast to select Iceland.

Davicom & Speedtouch

Hi,

My question was about the Speedtouch USB modem which used PPP over ATM, not Ethernet. My understanding is that getting Ethernet to work with Linux is a much easier affair because the technology has been around much longer, and is standard in the US for instance. You will need to configure the Ethernet card separately and then use the DSL configuration to sort out the modem. Perhaps you might use the manufacturer's website.

speedtouch & linux suse 9.0

Hi,
I also have me some problems to install the speedtouch adsl usb on linux suse 9.0.
I have attentively performed the following instructions:

____________________________________________________________

After this the speedtouch has finally started to work.
But the connection is slow.
Can someone help me?
Thanks.
