Suse 9.2 default dialer disconnecting after 7 mins of inactivity
 

Ok,

I run a small ISP and I have a client that is using Suse 9.2 to dial-up to my service. He is a total newb in linux at all and a friend talked him into installing suse on a slave drive. Well he doesnt even know what enviroment he is using much less what dialer.... does any one know what the default enviorment is? and what the "little plug in the corner of the screen" is? He is getting kicked off after 7 mins of inactivity. I do not know where to begin in Suse to look for the timeout settings.... I would appreciate any help!

Possibly an icon to start wvdial in a teminal. Have him right click on "little plug in the corner of the screen". Then click on "Properties". Then click on "Application". The resulting screen will tell him what command he is running.

If he is using wvdial then the timeout setting is in /etc/wvdial.conf. Setting:
Idle Seconds = 0
in /etc/wvdial.conf will turn off the timeout feature. Here is a wvdial readme in case you have to debug /etc/wvdial.conf further:

thanks for the reply.... this guy is a total newb.... he doesnt even know how to edit a .conf file... when i walked him through doing it it would not let him run the "cd" command... the i was going to have him "su" to root like i do in redhat... and suse updates kept coming up... do you know how to sudo him into root so that i can walk him thourhg editing the file?? btw... there is no "properties" option according to him... i might just end up installing suse just to walk this guy thorugh this... this is rediculous...

Type in the root password.

as i said in my last post... what he tells me is that when he types 'su' and hits enter.... suse updates comes up
is he doing something wrong? i had to explain to him what a terminal window is... im not sure if 'su' in suse causes a different reaction...
