I have two nic card in my desktop computer, one nic is directly connected to the internet and the
other one is connected to a plug and play switch, and my linux box is connected to that switch. so basically the linux box is behind a proxy server which is my desktop computer. my desktop computer is running a prog call AanalogX Proxy. So basically my desktop computer is sharing the internet connection with my linux box. |
Check the analogX website for usage of that particular program, I am not familiar with it.
I do know that you will need an ethernet interface to show up before any connectivity can be established. Try this: ifconfig eth0 up |
well the proxy is straight forward, u just assign an ip address to the proxy for example 127.0.0.1
and the comp that is connecting to it will have the sequential ip address like 127.0.0.2 and so on. there isnt really much to set up with the proxy. but u said that i've seem to be missing an eth interface, how can i fix this problem? by the way thanx for the help so far :) |
right then.. have you get up your network card?
if not then go to Start Menu > System > Yast it will ask you to login as root.. then go to Network Devices and click on your Network Card Icon now if your cards been configured (which it looks like it has) then there should be a section at the bottom that says Already configured devices click on the change button, then select network card and choose edit. enter a static IP address (24.156.0.2) and enter a subnet (255.255.255.0) if they are not already there click on Host name and name server configuration in the host name box, enter linux.. in the domain box enter your workgroup.. if you haven't got one, i believe MS defaults to MSHOME so try that (remember the capitals). you can all set the first name server box to the IP of your windows computer (i'm assuming 24.156.0.1) press ok and then press on next on the next screen and then click on finish this will write your new settings to the config files.. next thing to do, is go to the network services section of Yast, and scroll down until you find proxy. click enable proxy, and then enter your proxy settings for your HTTP and FTP like this http://WindowsIPAddress:Proxyport for example http://24.156.0.1:6588/ also it might be a good idea to use C class IP's for your network unless you really need to i.e. starting with 192.168. instead of 24.156. hope this helps |
also i dont know if this help but, i forgot to mention that my laptop with the linux OS, the laptop
has a dual boot, winxp/suse, could the problem being cause by the winxp OS? |
i doubt it, XP doesn't recognise Linux as existing on the same hdd
|
well thanx so far for everything, but i got to head to school rite now, when i get back i'll give that
a shot and if it's successful or not i'll let you know :) thanx again. |

hey Nuclear_Kitten
yeh after doing a little more research for myself, I realize what was missing and why the my internet connection wasn't working. It was a super silly mistake but a major headache. Everything was set up properly with the ip address and port number. But what i forgot to do was turn on SMB. well anyhow everything is working fine now, Thank everyone for your time and effort, especially to Nuclear_Kitten who took the time to elaborate on a solution to my problem, thanks.
