First things first,
We need to see some output from your system to know what may or may not be going wrong. We'll tackle the network connection first. Since you are able to post here we'll assume that you've got working hardware..... And I'll guess that your onboard ethernet from Asus is a 3com (correct me if I'm wrong)
go to your command prompt (open a terminal session) and run ifconfig as root like this:
Code:
su - {Enter}
yourpasswordhere {Enter}
ifconfig {Enter}
This should output at least two devices
similar, but not exactly the same as
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ehternet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
inter addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:89699 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
Buncha Other Info.........................................................................
......................................................................................................
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
Buncha Other Info..................................................................
................................................................................................
The important part is that you get both eth0 and lo as ethernet devices
if you only get lo, Linux isn't able to see your network device, and you should go to Asus and download the correct driver, compile and install it.
For compilation instructions, check out any files in the driver source code package named README or INSTALL or something to that effect.
Best of luck
