Suse 8 Realtek 8139 Problem

Hello,

Recent I took my 80 gig HD out of my old p2 400 and moved it into this machine xp1600+. I have a Biostar motherboard M7VIG Pro if I remember right. I booted suse 8 which was already installed on 80 gig drive using setup cd to boot installed system. Yast found all the hardware including the onboard nic Realtek 8139 which is set to dhcp for cable and the intel pci nic which is set to static for local net. After saving all changes and making the Realtek eth0 and the intel eth1 I rebooted.

On boot up it says eth0 (DHCP ) . . . . . No Ip adress yet backgrounding . I log in under root and run ifconfig and eth0 still does not have an ip adress. I run "if down eth 0" and then "if up eth0" and still no ip adress.

It sees the mac adress of the realtek right so it seems to be talking to the nic somewhat but I noticed that for RX bytes and TX bytes they both read (0.0 b) and they never change but under "RX Packets: dropped:397" the 397 number kept going up . I tried a different network cable didnt help.

Is the driver bad for suse 8? The realtek nic is good, the machine is dual boot and xp pro can find nic just fine and has inet access. Is the biostar on board nic known to have problems with suse?
How can I resolve this issue?

Thanks for all help

B
