Suse 10.0 freezes when enabling network service!
Hi every body,
Please be patient, I need your HELP
I have a problem with SuSE 10.0 and WLAN:
I installed SuSE 10 for a first time, it was impressive with KDE 3.4 and the Bluetooth modules as well as the Wireless modules, including rt2500.
As you may know, when you finish the installation process, no restart is required, and that exactly what happened with me. I logged in after installation, I had a lot of fun and good time using this perfect distro for the firs time, I managed to configure my wireless adapter which is "CNet CWP-854 Wireless-G PCI Adapter",
I was able to browse the shared folders on my ThinkPad R50e running Windows XP, I also managed to share my Internet connection from my SuSE desktop with XP laptop ,i.e I accessed the internet from the laptop using it's wireless adapter thru my desktop, my desktop has access to internet thru router. This means, the desktop has two interfaces, one of them is 802.3 used to connect to the router, and the other is 802.11g.
All the above scenario is done BEFORE I did a restart, i.e after I logged for the first time, and I repeate: BEFORE I did a restart.
Until now, every thing runs as expected and totally OK. The problem occured after I did a restart to the system, during system start up, every thing looks fine, UNTIL it reaches the initialization of the wlan interface: the system hangs up and no response at all, no Ctrl+Alt+Del, no Ctrl+Pause nothing would solve the situation except a cold restart, and the problem keeps showing up. I could not log into the system by means of any way, also using "fail safe" did not solve it.
I can tell it is a problem with the module that intiates the wlan, but I don't know how to solve it. Anyway, I installed SuSE again, with update option installation, after I finished installing, the problem also remains. I then started a fresh installation, formatted my partitions, and during network configuration, I set the wireless interface to start manually, the installation is finished just fine, I could log into the system with no problem at all as it is the first logging after installation. I then checked the network configuration to make sure that the wireless interface is set to start manually, after made sure that this was the condition, I mad a restart, the system booted normally, and once again I could log in with no problems, as the wlan is not started. I then went to YasT2, and configured the wlan to start at boot time, while the Yast2 is configuring and exactly at the stage of "starting network services" the system FREEZES once again, the odd thing is, it has not totally frozen, as I could close some open windows, I could click on the K menu and could run other applications. I waited for YaST to complete the task, but it wouldn't. I also couldn't close YaST window. I did a cold restart, as the attempts to make a warm restart failed, when booting the system, I got the same condition as before, it freezes at "enabling wlan interface".
I use static ip configuration for both interfaces, and I use IP Forwarding to be able to share the internet connection with my laptop.
Finally, I'm sorry for being too long in my post, and I hope to find the support from you. Any suggestions will be extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you using encryption with your wlan? I have just had a similar experience a few hours ago. If I don't use any encryption, everythin works fine, but if I use WPA encryption, the system freezes and the only way to get Suse to work again is to do a hard reboot. I have searched on the web and it seems like there are other people with the same problem but I have not found a solution for this yet.

Thanks reddazz for your fast response, but I think your solution is out of my case, you said "the only way to get Suse to work again is to do a hard reboot.", but even if I do a hard reboot, I cant get it work. In my case, the only way to get SuSE work again is to REINSTALL the system again!. Any way thank you, and I will give your solution a try, with a fresh installation of course!.

I don't know if that's the problem. I'm using Suse 10 with wlan (fixed IP) and WPA encryption on my laptop and everything works fine.
The only thing I've changed is the following:
My laptop has two network interfaces (cable & wireless). In order to get the wireless to work properly I've changed the cable interface so that it starts on cable connection and NOT at boot time.

Thanks jess1975,
I think your solution will not fit my case, as I have the cable always connected to my desktop, so if it is set to start on cable connection or at boot time, it won't make a difference.
I feel like there is a startup script or a specific configuration on my system that should solve the problem.
Thanx for your efforts.
