Surfboard SB4100
I recently have bought WinLinux 2001 and I'm quite pleased with it but...
I can not access internet through my network card Netgear FA311 Fast
Ethernet PCI and Motorola ( I believe ) Surfboard SB4100 cable modem.
Could anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or perhaps my hardware does
not support Linux. I know that cable modem does - I've got drivers for Linux
on the floppy. I will appreciate all ideas. Thank you.

sorry i'm far from an expert, but i'll try and help with the basics-
- Do you know what the driver module name is for your network card?
The module needs to be included in the kernel, or compiled as a loadable module. If it's a command card, it should be available already.
- If you know or find out the module name, execute 'modprobe <module name>' as root and see what happens.
let us know the results of this

You can safely ignore the cable modem - its not seen by linux as such. You just need to get the network card working, then set your box up as a DHCP client. I take it you have the Blueyonder/NTL service yeah?
cheers
Jamie...

i'm not sure about winlinux2001, but in redhat 7.1 you have to make sure you have PUMP installed, it is the DHCP client RPM. you might want to look for that, also make sure that your netgear has a driver module assigned to it. Though its not the best way to do it, you can look in Linuxconf (if that is included in WinLinux) and make sure your adapter (should be #1) has a module assigned to it, also, make sure you have your netgear adapter set up for DHCP, you can check that out under linuxconf....or /etc/network-scripts/eth0

well... I guess some other questions are in order:
Does you ISP use dynamic or static IP addressing? Mine uses static, but many others I know use dynamic.
Do you have a link light on both the cable modem and NIC?

Problem solved!!!
After a while I did managed to connect to internet using my network card and Blueyonder cable modem. I wasn't able to do it with WinLinux so I ordered Mandrake 8.1 from CheepLinux.com - I recommend them very good. By configuring my server address I was able to surf the net under Linux. Long live Linux and you all. Thank you.
