Subnet issues

Help,

I have fedora Core 1 running on my laptop, in a win 2K AD environment. We have multiple subnets on VLANS in our cisco switches.

I can ping across subnets, but, I can't access any machine outside my local subnet through network servers (SAMBA).

If I move the machine to another subnet it then works fine on that subnet but not outside.

What gives?

Jonathan

Could you provide some more information?

As you may or may not know VLAN's on switches are configured on a port by port basis. So you need to set up your Fedora's IP settings in accordance with the VLAN settings of the port on the switch to which you are connected. If the switch has routing capability then it will route the traffic between VLAN's making it possible to communicate with each other. If it doesn't than then each VLAN is likely to have an uplink to a router that does. Otherwise no VLAN is going to be able to reach another VLAN.

Well,

I'm able to ping across subnets without a problem, and am able to access the internet which requires me to hit a router outside of my subnet. the problem only seems to present when trying to access a windows machine outside of the subnet (VLAN).

The windows machines even show up in the smb:/// view (network servers)

There is no special setup required to have windows machines browse across the VLANS.

It is when you attempt to access them that you get an error message:

The action associated with "smb://<computer name>" is invalid

You can configure Gnome to associate a different application
or viewer with this file type. Do you want to associate an application or viewer with this file type now?

The window contains two buttons:

"Cancel" and "Associate action"

neither of which do anything at all.

does this help?

It does, but I must confess the solution is a mystery to me. :-(

Sorry.
