Subject: Wireless problem: can ping but can't connect; related to linux-backports-

I'm running ubuntu hardy on a Dell D630 with a 2.6.24-24 kernel

Last night, following a thread I installed linux-backports-modules-hardy using apt-get install
(I was hoping that this would fix the random freezes that seem to happen regularly to
everybody.)

Since then I've had problems with wireless connectivity
- I can ping yahoo.com successfully

64 bytes from b1.www.vip.sp1.yahoo.com (209.131.36.159): icmp_seq=794 ttl=56 time=11.3 ms

- but I can't connect to the internet, i.e. firefox won't load any url's, or if
it does load them, takes forever to do so. Same problem with opera

- miraculously the problem went away this morning: I booted an older kernel, everything was fine,
then went back to the newest kernel, and everything continued to work fine

- but this evening the same problem is back. Booting in recovery mode, or with an older kernel, hasn't helped

- on my wife's Dell D630, also running hardy, the internet works perfectly, ruling
out a problem with the wireless connection

- I removed linux-backports-modules-hardy using apt-get remove, but it didn't help.
since this install was the only thing that changed since yesterday morning, when
the wireless connection worked fine, I wonder if it's not fully removed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here are some configuration details.

I wondered if I could completely uninstall my wireless connection, and reinstall, but
have no idea how to do this.

You can try wicd as a replacement for network-manager. No guarantees it will work, and I should point out that if you install wicd, it replaces network-manager. This will make it difficult to go 'backwards' if you have a problem. Make sure you have an ethernet connection up and running if you want to try this!

Just to explain a little more: wicd and network-manager are GUI frontends to the back end networking tools like ifconfig and iwconfig. wicd has some extra tricks up it's sleeve for WPA and wireless, personally I find it very good.

Please make a back up before you do anything else!

Ubuntu was a PITA with the 3945 all the way until Intrepid. I guess the 4965 will suffer similarly.
My suggestion would be to get off Hardy.
