strange ip address

Using http://www.ipchicken.com/ my father determined his ip address to be 96.227.221.184. His ISP is Verizon FIOS. I tried to ssh to his computer but the connection timed out. Aren't the standard IP addresses something like 207.xxx.xxx.xxx?

You can read more about IP addresses here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address

As for the timeout. He probably has a router that is blocking all internet requests meaning he has to initiate communicatino for his router to let any traffic inside. Or he has doesn't have an ssh server running on his computer.

Your father's firewall (on his computer) may also be blocking ssh requests.
