Strange domain name resolution
 

I just finished compiling and setting up Gentoo v5 with the 2.6.11 r6 kernel. I used a genkernel and am running KDE 3.3.2. My network problems started while I was using emerge from the very beginning. I noticed that sometimes when emerge would goto the mirror to download the source packages it would resolve the domain name to 1.0.0.0. This happened for several different mirrors. But if I pinged the address just before it would resolve properly. Emerge would then resolve to the proper IP address and continue just fine.

Well now I'm in KDE and having issues that I believe are related. I emerged Firefox and it simply doesn't resolve addresses. If I ping in a terminal then goto the webpage it looks like it resolves but times out trying to load the first or second page. Similarly, when using the fish:// protocol if I ping just before trying to open 'fish://user@domain.com' it will work. Same with SSH.

If I type in the actual IP address of the site (ie: fish://user@ip-address) then it works just fine. Likewise, if I type in the IP address for FireFox it seems to do better but with problems.

Note: Links and Konqueror both work just fine, for either domain names or IP addresses. This makes me think that it may not just be a router problem but software.

Also, this computer is a dual boot with Windows XP and XP has no problems (neither do any of the other computers on my network).

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before? Any suggestions about what may be causing this or how to solve it?

BTW: I have an Actiontec DSL modem going into a Microsoft router (which then dishes the connection to all my computers).
