Unhappy Strange "Connection Refused" Error.....

Hello to all...
I have 2 issues that I need help with.....

First issue:

I have spent some time searching the forums but I haven't found anything that exactly matches my situation. I have a RH9 box that I am setting up to act as a replacement webserver for an ailing Win2K Server box. I can connect to the website on the Linux box (logging in with my normal Linux username/pw) from any other machine on my network, but when I am sitting in front of the Linux box and try I get "connection refused on servername". I have tried 127.0.0.1, 192.168.1.XX, and the server name. When I only use the actual IP of the box, I get the default Apache page. I am doing all of this logged in as a user. I have temporarily disabled the firewall to see if that was causing the issue, no luck. When I try to run SWAT, I get the same "Connection refused on localhost" error. I have verified that SWAT is installed and running.

Second issue:

Also, I would like to have this box be the DNS server for my network also. I have BIND installed but I don't know how/what information to add to the "zones ?". I would appreciate any/all help or suggestions with this.

Thanks in advance!!!!

When you connect from other machines, do you use IP of the server or a hostname?

There's a nice howto about setting up bind: ttp://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html

DNS zone files are pretty complicated at first.
O'reilly has a book about Bind which handles DNS and Bind in great depth. It might be overkill.

Connect to your linux box using your un/pw. How do you log in? Are you trying to connect to the webserver or are you login in to the linux box, using telnet or ssh?

What are your config for your Apache? Have you altered the standard config?

Thanks for the reply. When I access the website from another machine I use the name of the server (i.e. http://foobar/website_name"). This usually works. I can also get there by susbstituting the ip address. Both work remotely but not locally.

Hope this info helps and thanks again!!!

Any alteration to your standard Apache settings?
