Unhappy stopping auto mount hang my machine


when i run
/etc/rc.d/init.d/autofs stop
the machine just hange :-( moreover it sometime does not hang.
i'm using a fedora, with kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl on a ibm thinkpad T40

It is really frastrating, i'm afraid to mount my laptop, since when i umount it
may hang. this is typical for windows not linux.

Any help is wellcome
