It has been a while since I messed with squid, but I can try to help.

Are you trying to configure squid.conf as root?

Hi,
The squid.conf is pretty commented and reading them will help you to understand it well. use any of the console text editors to edit and my favourate is nano for editing any conf files.
a visit to
http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ.html
and http://squid.visolve.com/squid/sqguide.htm
will help you out
If U cant edit the file, pls let us know how you are trying to open it and whats the error you are getting.Pls post more info about how and what r u trying to do
