static ip adrres on linux and server name


hi,
i am trying to install oracle E-business suite applications on my system with red hat linux 4.0,this is just my personal pc. i need to have have a static ip address for the server.........(that bypasses any DNS name check).......please help me out how do i give a static ip to this pc so that my applications work, cause i a newbie to Red Hat Linux..

You cannot set a static ip unless you are provided one by your ISP.

I suggest you provide 127.0.0.1 to the application. This address is routed to itself, so as long as you don't need to access this app over the wire, it should do what you need.

in that case can i assign a static ip address to the nic card so that whenever i boot the pc it has the same ip ...

I already said...

You cannot configure your NIC with some random ip address and expect it will work. You can set it up statically with a reserved private ip address (eg 192.168.0.1) but then you will not be able to access the internet.

Did you try 127.0.0.1? It will already be up and configured. I am not familiar with "oracle E-business suite applications" but unless it is completely braindead this address should work just fine as long as you are using the apps from the same box they are installed on...
