SSL Connections / second and SSL Accelerator Cards on Linux

I was wondering how many SSL connections / second a typical 3 GHz 64-bit Xeon processor could handle? Has anyone benchmarked similar hardware or any hardware for that matter? Also, it if can't handle a large number (hundreds or thousands / second), what SSL Accelerator Cards would you recommend? Thanks for your help.
