SSH weirdness

Hello!

Since an upgrade (that didn't upgrade the SSH server, but I recall it started happening since then) my FC6 SSH server is acting weird.

A login takes FIFTY (50) seconds on a 4Mb/256Kb ADSL line. This never happened before. I check the logs with a tail -f /var/log/* and all I get is the AUTH success message after 20 seconds and the user prompt at 50 seconds.

How can I tell what's happening? Is is the system or the modem? I'm running FC6 with the 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 i686 kernel, openssh-server-4.3p2-10 and the modem is a Draytek Vigor V2700G, with the QoS options off.

After login, it is fast - it's just the login wait is, well, odd. No CPU consuming jobs running.

Please help!

Thanks!

It sounds like it might be looking for another authentication mechanism and timing out before falling back to (I'm assuming) files.

Are you using LDAP? Is LDAP installed?

Have a look in /etc/pam.d/sshd (also look at it's includes) and see if it's looking to another auth mechanism before it looks at your password file.

Fixed! Got a new modem and apparently DNS is somewhat broken on it. I added "UseDNS no" to the config file and logins are instantaneous now.
