ssh internet -> router -> slackbox
 

Hi,
I am trying to connect to my home computer from someone elses house.
I have a very basic network which looks like this:

[internet]---[cable modem]---[simple dhcp router]---[computer]

my computer is assigned an ip addy by my router, which, in turn, is supplied its own ip from my isp. How then do I connect to my computer from the internet?

Any help on this is much appreciated as I am still unsure how to use things like name servers and stuff - basically anything more complicated than dhcp!

you might try a free (unless you wanna pay for a name) domain.
i use no-ip.com, they have a linux version of there client to update your name to match a changing IP and you can set the intervals to check for the change,

i havent had any problems in configuring it and have had no interruption in service since creating a free account and installing/configuring the client some 9-10months ago

Q. What do i type in the command line? on my home lan it would be "ssh 192.168.#.#" but if I ssh to my new host I will be connecting to my router won't I?

ps. it's a small 4 port router, not a computer router

edit: shall i just get rid of the router and make a proper network?

you'll need to enable port forwarding on your router. enable port forwarding to the internat machine running slack and what ever port your ssh deamon is running on, its usually 22 unless you have changed it. then ssh to your domain or ip.
