putty -> connection -> seconds between keepalives (i put 300 in there).

in your $HOME/.ssh/config

Host *
Compression no
ConnectionAttempts 5
ForwardAgent yes
ForwardX11 yes
Protocol 1,2
KeepAlive yes
ProtocolKeepAlives 80

you may not need all of those but the bottom one is importent.

ProtocolKeepAlives 80

that line produces this error

/home/jani/.ssh/config: line 8: Bad configuration option: ProtocolKeepAlives
/home/jani/.ssh/config: terminating, 1 bad configuration options

i haven't tried in windows yet

ssh freezes

Have you checked your firewall (on server and/or client)?

If you are blocking ICMP packets this can affect dynamic packet negoiations initiated by any router between you and your server.

This stops your server/client responding as it should to these negoiatations.

If in doubt enable ICMP and give that a try.
