SSH forward (tunnel) overhead ?

I thought it would be a good idea to alter my ssh_config file and add some LocalForward static (permanent) forwards for one of my hosts. There is currently only one forward though, it opens up LAN-side web-panel access for my router (:80).

I was wondering if there was much overhead in building this tunnel even if I don't use it ? My ssh client is only a 333 MHz iBook (though that should change soon )

Honestly I have tunnels created to various sites and sometimes they are even chained from one host to the next. I have never encountered and hick up on the performace side of things. Normally the tunnels sit and LISTEN nothing else only when a session is established will that change and even then I still do not see any performance issues. The only time u might encounter a problem is when u do not keep track of you tunnels and a specific app needs that port and it might come into conflict.

Like I said this is only from personal piont of view maybe there will be a more in depth explaination if there is a performance issue or not.

That's pretty much what I thought. Thanks for the details!
