i can't remotely log in to my gentoo box using the name anymore ("gentoo" - imaginative, huh? ), but i can using the IP. i have no clue as to what might be the matter -- anyone have a guess?

then when i do ssh, i still get:
sero@slackware:~$ ssh -l jeff -p 435 gentoo
ssh: gentoo: Name or service not known
???
is the dig supposed to set something, or just give info, like a ping? i'm not seeing the usable info there, especially since i did a dig with a nonexistant name, and the output looked almost exactly the same.
dig is to supply you with dns records of <server>.
if your machine "gentoo" had a dns record dig would show the name of you server "gentoo" and then the ip address that it was bound to.
so since you probably won't be paying for registering your gentoo box I would suggest:
edit your /etc/hosts file on you slackware machine.
put and entry like so:
<ip address of gentoo> <tab> gentoo
then save the file and exit.
now try pinging gentoo. It should reply with success and show the ip address of your gentoo box.
