SSH connects but hangs

I have installed ssh-3.2.0 on my Red Hat 7.3 system.
It sits behind a Linksys router with port 22 forwarded to port 22
on my linux box.

I can connect to this box from the internet via ssh.
At various times (within 2 minutes) the ssh session just hangs.
I then need to close the shell on the client side.
In fact it often hang in the middle of displaying the output
of 'ls -l'.

On my ssh "server", I have tried ssh and OpenSSH. I get the
same results with both.

Any ideas?

First of all, get RID OF ssh-3.2.0 since there are more than just a couple of exploits for it. Install the latest version which is secure, 3.4 at this time.

Try ssh -v -l username hostname and post the results.

the -v is the verbose option, and the -l is the login

If you don't want to risk the security of your box I suggest you rather do an SSH upgrade PRIOR to any other ongoing tasks!

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I will definitely upgrade to the latest version of SSH. But I found the problem of the "hanging" ssh session. There was a problem with the firmware of my Linksys router. After going to the Linksys support page, I downloaded and upgraded to the latest firmware. That seemed to do the trick. Regardless, Thanks for the advice on the security issues. I appreciate it.

One question about ssh v3.2 vs. 3.4...

I'm running ssh-3.2.0 from www.ssh.org.
That seems to be their latest version.

But OpenSSH has v3.4 as their latest.

Is the security bug in both versions (ssh and OpenSSH)?
Or is it just OpenSSH?
