SSH and Samba over internet
Hi
I have a Linux box at the office that is connect to the internet through DSL. It shares some files on the office network using samba. What I need to do is to be able to:
1. Connect to the Linux box using ssh
2. Access the samba shares
3. access the other pc’s shares (if possible)
From my home pc through the internet (or any pc connected to the internet for that matter)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

what's the "other pc," in number 3?
ssh can handle all that. if pc 3 is windows, just mount the shares on the linux box and you can get them with scp (secure copy, comes with ssh).

The other pc are all windowz workstations. I can ssh to the Linux box when I’m on the local office network, but not through the internet. I also cannot ping the Linux box’s ip (the one assigned by ISP).
Any Ideas?

you have to set up your firewall to accept ssh and ping (if you want to ping, not necessary though). you should follow an SSH tutorial to make sure you are setting up your keys and everything securely. there are plenty of good ones out there that will take you through it step by step, just google it and post back if it doesn't work. it's relatively straightforward though, so you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks.

I think it would be better setting up a virtual network connection than using samba through an ssh tunnel. Samba and Windows normally use more than one port to function. I think you would need to set up the windows computer to use a single port for smb, such as 445. This may effect how it operates in the local network. Even with a VPN, you will need a wins server at the gateway to browse across subnets.
You could install cygwin/X on the windows machine at work that you want to connect to and have an sshd server running accepting connections. Then you could use scp, sftp or the fish: protocol in konqueror from your home computer. You will need to have the port you use forwarded to your work computer.
You will need to run this by your IT dept. at work, if one exists. If you work for a publicly held company you have to be very careful. It might not be legal due to SOX.
