I am in the process of setting up squid. I have a couple of questions of how to go about doing this. First off the specs.
Suse Linux 9.1 Pro 64 bit edition
AMD 64 3000+
(512*2) DDR400
36.7GB Raptor
This is going to be a dedicated squid box.
We have a T1 in this location and the other 5 locations have 1/2 T1 coming to this location(everything goes through us).
They are approx. 85 users
Squid 2.5(I can install any version if one is better than the other)
I have not set anything up with squid yet, I am not sure how to do it, I want it set up to where all http, email, ect request have to go though the proxy without setup on each workstation if at all possable(I don't want it to be bypassed)
Now I have a Gigabyte K8NSNXP mobo that has 2 built in ethernet ports. What I need to know is how to configure those and to configure squid so they it will work correctly. Any input is great. Thanks again,
first u must learn how to configure your network. then u should learn about iptables. because u cannot use squid for smtp and pop3. u must allow clients to connect pop3 smtp and etc. via NAT.
hmm. another way u can setup a mail server on your linux box. and your mail server can get emails from external mail server, and check spams and viruses. so your clients can get mail without viruses and spams from your linux server.
What I want to happen, is have all http, ftp, ssl, other common ports be redirected from the router to the proxy. We already have a inhouse mail server. I was wondering if someone had a proxy config that they could copy over and I could mod were needed. Any input is useful. Thanks,
I am reading that posted link. I have one more question, what kind of antivirus software can I use on a proxy server? Again, I am running Suse Linux 9.1 pro. Thanks,
I also have another question, how can i view the access logs, what program should I use. Also, if someone was on a site(porn) and I was not sure if that is what it was, are the images saved on the proxy server? If they are, how do I view them? Thanks,
i can advice u squidguard. it works as a child program of squid. and it has over 100.000 entries in its blacklist to block porn warez addware etc. it works well. www.squidguard.org
i dont know a software to watch access log online.
i dont know a software to see cache entries in squid. u may search like this softwares at www.freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net
u can use sarg to see squid access log as a web page. http://sourceforge.net/projects/sarg/
i added a cron job for sarg. it works once everyday and generate a web page from access.log.
i have configured my apache to publish squid logs. surely apache asks the password to show the web page of access logs :-)
There is a kernel lodable modile called ip_wccp which you can load in the box which runs squid.
ip_wccp component is also there on the router. So once you are through configuring the both squid and router you can check the ip_wccp session come up.
Now the router will redirect any req it gets from users to any server port 80 it will redirect to the squid box.
This activity is transparent to the users and also callled as transparent proxy.
You do not have to make any configuration changes on the user w/s.
