I don't think you can proxy pop3 (or imap) traffic. Although it's possible to proxy smtp traffic, it can be exploited by spammers to relay mail. There's some info on this at http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq...0e5b6f043c139d
If you find a way to successfully (and securely) do this, can you post it here please?

Dear Chetan,
just give us the full breif about your problem, well as i understand your qestion is to how to configure outlook express to receive mails from a linux based mail server, right??
there is nothing to do in this, you just need to give your server`s ip address or name as pop3 server address as well as for smtp server address. it works,..

most of ISP`s are using squid proxies only so i dont think that there should be any problem in accessing pop3 accounts via squid proxy,..
i am using iptables NAT server in place of proxy and i am able to access pop3 accounts over it.

See as per my knowledge for setting up the outlook express you need to go through these steps:
1. check if your mail server is giving you pop3 access or not, so if without using squid proxy you are able to use pop3 accounts then your mail server is serving pop3 service.
2. check if you have given correct proxy address into your internet explorer`s properties or not.
steps to do the same are:-
open your internet explorer-->tools-->internet options-->connections-->lan settings-->click on use proxy and fill the ip address of your proxy server.
3. check if your proxy server is allowing pop3 traffic or not.if you are not able to access proxy server for the same purpose then use nmap port scanner to scan open ports on proxy server.
4. check if you have given the correct ip address of pop3 and smtp servers in outlook.
If these given things are correct then your pop3 account shold work without any problems.

Harinder Singh
