Squid and Outlook

I recently configured a squid server for a W2K workstation that was using outlook for its e-mail. After setting the squid server address on the workstation, it could still connect to the internet but now cannot send or receive any mail.

Can this be solved by modifying the squid configuration file or would i have to setup a mail server for this purpose?
