Thumbs down sparc-debian problem

i am installing debian 2.2r3 on a sun ultra 5 workstation. When the box has booted and the login comes up the following error messages apear every 30 seconds or so-

eth0: Autonegiation unsucessful, trying force link mode

eth0: Link down, cable problem?

eth0 is the onboard network card

i have no idea why it is doing this. the only reason i can think of it even wanting to reach the network is because when installing i was prompted for which eth* i wanted to use to install debian. i noted this as strange as i am installing from cd and this prompt wasnt optional

any help/clues on stopping it doing this would be great

cheers

rlpt
