sound over net


im wondering if theres a way to listen to sound files in the linux server , over the internet in a remote location without having to download.. kinda something like X11 forwarding with ssh ???

well there are plenty of streaming clients, like icecast / ices

more in line with what you are actually asking, i.e. a local server connection as in X11 forwarding, then both esd and arts can do this. I'd have liked to be pretty sue that alsa could too, but i'm unable to find anythign about it...

That link was awsome. Helped me do exactly what it said. Here's my problem though. Now that I'm able to stream sound from a specific application through SSH, I want to figure out how to stream input from my mic. I can get the input of my mic to come out the speakers on my linux box, but since it's not from a specific application, i can't figure out how to use esd to redirect it.

Any ideas?

No one has any suggestion for a simple application that uses the mic as an input and sends the sound out the speakers?
