software that will let me set up an internal chat

I am looking for software that will let me set up an internal chat server like msn. I don’t want it linked to the outside world. The client computers will be windows. But the servers will be SME5.6 or windows2003 server. Do any of you no of software I could use. Free is the best thanks.

Jabber (jabber.org) is quite good. I have set it up and it works well. I would recommend using the Exodus client if you want to use Windows based clients with it. You can get this from the site also.

It runs on Linux and Unix based servers. The server requirements are quite modest, so you could start with an old pentium machine and see how it handles the load. What is SME5.6?

The documentation is poor so you will need to spend some time going through the mailing list to resolve some issues.

Start with the Jabber admin guide.

Let me know how it works out.
