Socket receiving buffer exceeding the "rmem_max" value

For an application with "heavy" network receiving throughput, I need to increase the receiving kernel buffer size of my socket with "setsockopt (SO_RCVBUF)".

But I found strange that the buffer size I pass to the "setsockopt (SO_RCVBUF)" can exceed the "rmem_max" value: "setsockopt (SO_RCVBUF)" return 0 and "netstat -su" show far less receiving buffer error than if I don't make the "setsockopt (SO_RCVBUF)". So for now I was thinking that it works.

But, as I still have some errors, I increase the "rmem_max" value, and all my errors disappear, so why the "setsockopt (SO_RCVBUF)" return without error when the bufsize is over the rmem_max value?

I'd say that "setsockopt (SO_RCVBUF)" exceeded "rmem_max" default value and not "rmem_max" maximum limit.
