socat slow

Hi all,

I am trying to access a file on a remote machine as if it were local. I am trying to use socat, like so:

socat PTY,link=remote,raw,echo=0 EXEC:'"ssh [the remote machine] socat - OPEN:somefile,creat,ignoreeof"'

And this works, but for some reason, downloading a file to 'remote' causes what would otherwise be a ~2MB/s download to slow to ~70kB/s. There is a LAN connection between the local and remote machine, typically getting ~7MB/s transfers, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or have any suggestions for what might work better?

Note sshfs isn't an option, I don't have sufficient rights to install fuse on the local machine.

Cheers.
