Question So what is Linux Mandrake 7.0 like

Never used Linux. I want to. Got a look at Red Hat 6 and liked it very much seeing the fvwm GUI and GNOME.

I heard though that Linux Mandrake rules...(Even though you have to buy it I heard it is well worth the purchase) Is this true?

well, not necessarily, you don't have to buy it, you can download it for free. it is considered the good newbie distro, very easy to install and use. oh, don't know about 7.0, they are on 8.1 now, so 7.0 is a little outdated, so if you decieded to get it, i would go with a later install.

If you wanted to try a Mandy distro, but not necessarily the latest, then I would at least go fo v7.2. The simple reason is that Mandy now comes with an 'update' facility. If you've got any version prior to v7.2 then it will not update so you would have to backup all your important data and then do a normal install and then reload all your backup data.

I must add, though, that since you can download .ISO files (CDrom images that need to be burned onto a CD) of the latest vesion (8.1), it is probably worth it.

Apparently SuSe is also a very good distro for newbies. Never actually tried it and not sure where you can download .ISO files from. Anyone?

pretty sure it's always been downloadable, 7.0 definitely was.

you only buy it for a proper installation manual, doc cd's and other very random stuff filling up 4 extra cd's. most posh distros are in al the shops too... rh, md, suse *cough* corel *cough*...

people aren't stupid when they buy a distro, upto them, if they want more support etc...
