SNMP trap/notification for NIC failure

Does anyone know how to get Linux to send SNMP traps when an NIC fails? I've looked all over the web for an answer to this, and can only find either heavyweight monitoring applications that show graphs etc. (all I need is a simple trap sent out) of your whole system, or documentation on net-snmp.

My platform is Redhat AS4 on an HP DL385. The standard net-snmp installation on mybox does have a great deal of information in it's mibs, but no specific traps for NIC failure. Will I have to write a program myself to do this, or is there something already available that can be configured to provide this?

Many thanks
