SNMP not installed on RH 7.3(Valhalla)

Greetings,

I have a Linux box which does NOT have snmp installed on it. Normally I would find the snmpd.confg file in the /etc/snmp directory but not on this box. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as installing snmp on this box (maybe if someone can point me towards a certain rpm for net-snmp)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Caveats:
-Box is used as a protocol processor for satellite communications.
-I want to install snmp so my Solarwinds box can monitor cpu, memory, ethernet usage, etc...
-I was not the one who installed the OS on this box. It was performed by a third party company which we buy software from.
-I called the company and they stated that they do not support snmp on these protocol processors.
-I am by no means Linux savvy.
-I am a CCNA,CCNP certified network engineer and resolving complex network issues are my job so my learning curve shouldn't be that great.

Thanks again!

First off, RH 7.3 is ancient. Security support for this version is non-existant for several years now. If this is a box that is in any way connected to a public network I strongly recommend you to upgrade to a version with active security support.

Since the version you are running is so old I doubt you will find pre-compiled binaries (you might give it a try at rpmfind.net). So your best bet would be to go to http://www.net-snmp.org/ get the source code and compile it.

Thanks for your reply. I was able to find ucd on the RH2 installaton disc. It installed fine. Thanks for the tip about active security support. I'm so outta touch with Linux that I didn't think 7.3 was so outdated as an OS.

The servers are behind a firewall and 3 or 4 more security appliances and are not exposed to the internet. Your right about the upgrade, you can never be to safe.

My friend just turned me on to Debian, he says its his favorite Linux distro. I like Slackware myself.

Thanks for your help.
